The fifth game of the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 took place between India and Nepal at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Pallekele. The Rohit Sharma-led side booked their berth in the Super 4 stage of the tournament after their massive 10-wicket win.

India won the toss and opted to field first. They had a poor start with the ball as they dropped few chances and also conceded a lot of runs in the powerplay. Kusal Bhurtel (38) and Aasif Sheikh (58) took the bowlers to the cleaners and smashed 65 runs partnership for the opening wicket inside the powerplay.

However, after the wicket of Bhurtel, Nepal lost wickets at regular intervals. But Aasif Sheikh (58) smashed a brilliant fifty to make sure that his side didn’t waste the start they got. In the middle phase, they tumbled and were reduced to 132/5. The likes of Gulsan Jha (23) and Dipendra Singh (29) struck vital 20s.

Before Sompal Kami (48) played a blinder in the end to take Nepal to a competitive total of 230 runs. For India, Ravindra Jadeja was the pick of the bowlers with his figures of 3/40. Mohammed Siraj also picked three wickets whereas Shardul Thakur, Mohammad Shami, and Hardik Pandya picked one wicket each.

Chasing the target, Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill started off well but their openers were tested too. They scored 17 runs before rain played the spoilsport. The conditions were revised as India then were set a target of 145 runs in 23 overs.

After the rain break, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill batted pretty well and got some desired runs under their belt. They both struck valiant half-centuries and stitched unbeaten 147 runs to win the game for the team. The captain ended with the unbeaten score of 74 runs whereas Gill scored 67 runs.
